Late Check-Out

Four nights in one house, from the plague year to this Halloween. You rented it for the week; every time the lights go out, the house forgets what year it is.

The four parts

Each part is a complete escape room of its own. Played in order they are one story, and each part after the first begins with a door that asks what you did in the part before.

The kitchen of an old manor at night, a wide stone fireplace with a fire burning, an iron pot on a chain, oak beams, copper pans on the walls, a single candle on a scrubbed table and a leaded window black with night. Nobody in the room.

Part 1

The Shutting-Up

A red cross on the door, a fire that must not go out, and four hours until the watchman looks in.

The hall of an old manor in the 1920s at night, lit by one bare electric bulb: the foot of a great oak stair with its tall carved newel post, a dust sheet over a hall table beneath a framed photograph, and a doorway glowing red at the far end. Nobody there.

Part 2

The Sitting

A séance on the anniversary of a death, a medium with a red lamp, and a son who will not answer.

The hall of an old manor in the wartime blackout: black cloth hung half across the tall window, a black telephone and a book on a small table by the stair, the carved newel post at its foot, and a dim glow from the kitchen doorway. Nobody there.

Part 3

No Light May Show

A secret wireless school in the blackout, an agent whose messages know every code, and two more about to fly to her.

The hall of a restored manor in 2026 at night, lit by a few recessed lights: a keypad lock glowing blue beside a heavy front door, a glass case on a hall table holding an old open ledger, and the carved newel post at the foot of the stair. Nobody there.

Part 4

Lights Out

The last night of the booking, every light in the house burning, and a front door that will not open before midnight.

How this series works

  • In order Play them in order: part two's first door asks what you did in part one, and so on.
  • Going back A wrong answer can lead down the wrong path, and the wrong path can send you back to an earlier part to put it right. Every part stays open, so going back costs nothing.
  • The finale Everything you did in the first three parts comes back in the last one, on Halloween night.
